A long-shot campaign to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom turned much more serious with a $500,000 donor behind it.
Prov 3:9, LLC, a consulting firm in Irvine, Calif., made the donation Tuesday to the recall campaign Rescue California, which came together because of dissatisfaction with Newsom’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. A Late Contribution Report, which is a state public document, showed that the recall campaign also received $100,000 from Douglas Leone, partner of the venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, and his wife, Patricia.
“We have our beliefs in terms of the direction the state needs to go, and we felt that this effort was worthy of our contribution,” Prov 3:9, LLC, manager Thomas Liu told Politico.
Last month, a judge allowed for the recall effort to have three more months to gather the 1.5 million signatures needed to certify a recall. Organizers are aiming for 2 million to assure they get enough validated signatures, but they said they have about 800,000 thus far after more than six months.
A $2 million donation by Rep. Darrell Issa helped the successful 2003 recall effort of California Gov. Gray Davis, the only successful ouster in the state’s 55 gubernatorial recall attempts since 1911. The current one is gaining public traction with the support of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former California gubernatorial candidate John Cox.
The Prov 3:9, LLC, is a bit mysterious with its address listed as the same for an accounting firm where Liu is a partner. The name’s Bible verse is “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.”
With all the shutdowns of schools and businesses, Rescue California has a renewed chance of shutting down the Newsom administration.
