You figured it would only be a matter of hours before the publicists representing Will Smith crafted an apology for him, or maybe he watched the video of his actions and witnessed the reaction of most people who saw it and realized if someone other than one of the world’s biggest movie star did what he did to Chris Rock at the Oscars, they’d be arrested.

He decided to do it on Instagram, posting this message Monday.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Also, on Monday, a spokesperson for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said it would launch a review of the altercation. Their lawyers helped write a response on Monday too.

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law.”

It does make you wonder what would have happened if an unknown makeup artist or sound technician that helped score a blockbuster slapped a presenter at the Oscars.  They’d likely be hiring a lawyer to defend them in court, not write a press release.
