Filling a tank of gas in California is something that hurts everyone right now, especially people in California, where prices are the highest in the nation. Last check, one gallon of unleaded is $6.07 in Cali and a lot higher at some stations.

So, the Sacramento Police Department decided to be creative and announced a program where if you bring in a gun and turn it in, you get a $50 gas card. It’s a way to get firearms off the street and help people who need to drive.

The program was so successful that the police department ran out of gift cards in 45 minutes.  The event was supposed to last five hours. A total of 134 guns were turned in.  Cops said they had an assault weapon and multiple components for dangerous ghost guns.

Here’s what Police Chief Kathy Lester told Fox.

“As a department, we will continue to use innovative ideas to increase the safety of our community.  I truly believe violent crime prevention is a shared responsibility and today’s overwhelming community participation is evidence of the success we can achieve together.”

Memorial Day is coming up, and Triple-A estimates that almost 35 million Americans are driving 50 or more miles for the holiday.  That’s up 4.6% from last year.
