Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is also CEO of Texas-based SpaceX, has more money than just about any human on Earth, but his current home’s base price is $50,000.
Why? Well, that’s not something readily available for explanation, so let’s focus on this truly humble abode in Starbase, Texas, where SpaceX is manufacturing its products.
In a tweet from earlier this month, Musk talked personal housing.
“My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though,” Musk wrote. “Only house I own is the events house in the Bay Area. If I sold it, the house would see less use, unless bought by a big family, which might happen some day.”
He has that home in the Bay Area on the market and is trying to sell it.
The outlet Teslarati reported that a tip it received indicated Musk’s unit is a “Boxabl Casita.” And if you’re going to own a casita then why not a boxable casita?
Officially, it’s a prefab home, 20×20 and it’s foldable but surprisingly durable, apparently, with concrete panels and steel. And it can be pulled by a Tesla Model X.
The rumors, seemingly now confirmed, date to last November when Boxabl posted a promotional video containing a tagline that hinted this particular unit belonged to a special customer who wanted a SpaceX Falcon 9 poster on the front door.
Musk, worth about $170 billion, did mention that he has installed improvements to the home that would probably make it worth about $70,000.
At least these casitas can be hooked up to utilities – and Boxabl says they’re hurricane and storm resistant, fire-resistant and flood-resistant. The homes also employ solar panels, backup batteries and other forms of smart technology – and clients receive both heating and air conditioning, standard.
