Here’s a new drinking game to play, if you are allowed to be with other people, in a bar, with alcohol, anytime soon. Take turns describing ways that the sports world has changed since the coronavirus has entered into arenas and stadiums around the world. The first person who can’t think of a way things have been turned upside down has to pay for the entire bar tab of your group. Games would go on for hours!
So, without further ado, here’s the latest new and unimproved thing to look forward to when the college basketball season tips off soon: no fans at Duke games. Duke University doesn’t just have fans, they are called “Cameron Crazies” and they are some of the most rabid and passionate in all of sports. Students camp out overnight waiting for tickets – that’s how in-demand they are. There literally is nothing like Cameron Indoor Stadium when it is packed and literally rocking from the noise and foot-stomping of the Crazies.
Social distancing inside this cozy, quaint and historic arena that fits only 9,314 fans on a game night? Yeah, about as likely CNN hiring Ted Nugent as lead anchor.
Here’s another perfectly crafted statement written to show equal parts concern, self-importance and plausible deniability. “As Duke University continues to be an industry leader providing a safe environment for intercollegiate athletic competition, the decision to maintain our non-spectator protocol is imperative for the overall health and safety of the Blue Devil fan base, student-athletes, coaches and support staff, notwithstanding the immediate campus population comprised of students, faculty and staff,” athletic director Kevin White said. “We will continue to embrace the challenges of this unique if not unprecedented time with flexibility and compliance, and can’t begin to thank our dedicated, passionate fans enough for their unbridled support.”
Translation? “Blah, blah, blah!”
