Donald Trump doesn’t hand out compliments to Democratic politicians very often, and when he does, they are generally layered in insults and funny one-liners. At a rally in Londonderry, New Hampshire Sunday, Trump “praised” his 2016 opponent in the presidential race Hillary Clinton. Kind of. He was telling his crowd of supporters that his 2016 rival “had more energy” than current challenger Joe Biden, and then he added that Hillary was “a more intelligent person” as well.

“You think Sleepy Joe would be doing these things? I don’t think so,” the president said. “He’ll go back to bed. Hillary used to spend a lot of time in bed too. But she had more energy than him. She did.”

That was the extent of the compliment. Trump went to work to make sure he wouldn’t be confused with a Hillary Clinton fan. “They said, ‘What’s the difference between Crooked Hillary Clinton and Biden?’ I said, ‘Well, obviously they’re both crooked,’ but let’s get out of that,” Trump continued. “The big difference is, she had more energy — but not much — and she’s a more intelligent person. I will say that.”

The President’s memory brought him back to what Clinton referred to his followers as four years ago, and he reminded them of that. “She’s a much more intelligent person, Until she used the word ‘deplorables,’ I thought she was very smart.”  During the 2016 campaign Clinton called Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables.”
