Long before William Shatner became the biggest name celebrity to hitch a ride one of Jeff Bezos’ rockets, Tom Cruise was asked if he wanted to buy that passenger seat.

Hanks told Bezos he had no interest, since it came with a $28 million price tag.

The movie star was on Jimmy Kimmell Live this week promoting his new movie Finch, when the conversation turned to the Blue Origin rocket ship called New Shepard.

Hanks told Kimmell that Bezos expected him to pay $28 million. “You know, it cost 28 million bucks or something like that. And I’m doing good, Jimmy. I’m doing good. But I ain’t paying 28 [million] bucks.”

Hanks took it a step further, informing Kimmell he really could care less about the whole experience of flying into pseudo space.

“You know what, we could simulate the experience of going to space right now. It’s about a 12-minute flight — is that about it? We could all do it in our seats right here.”

What’s really funny about this story is Hanks apparently wants to take a ride on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic according to a report in Insider.

That ticket will only cost Hanks $250 grand.
