Is Tom Cruise the greatest movie star ever? Probably, and he’s almost certainly the most committed, meticulous, demanding, and long-term. Think about this; remember the 1993 film The Firm that Cruise starred in when he was 30 years old? He’s the same age now (59) that Wilford Brimley was in that movie.

Cruise is ageless, and his youthful energy and box office appeal is lifting his new film “Tog Gun: Maverick, to new heights.  The film from Paramount is not streaming; it’s in theaters and has earned $151 million during Memorial Day weekend, the second-best opening on this weekend ever.

Still in first place, barely, is the other actor who’s dominated headlines the last six months; Johnny Depp, who brought in $153 million for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” back in 2007.

Not only are people going to Maverick this weekend, but they also love it. Movie-goers give it an A+ CinemaScore.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the money for the flick is pouring in worldwide, with global totals expected to soar over $275 million even though the film is not playing in Russia or Hollywood.

The initial plan was for “Maverick” to be released in 2019 but got pushed multiple times because of Covid.
