As dedicated as Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is to winning football games, it probably isn’t surprising to hear he’s interested in other forms of winning, too.
Brady keyed on one particular Super Bowl betting prop prior to Tampa Bay’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Brady rushing-yards bet was whether he would finish with one or more rushing yards (the “over/under” was a half-yard).
Bucs QB coach Clyde Christensen, Monday on “The Pat MacAfee Show,” revealed details from a quarterbacks meeting:
“We walk in and Brady goes, ‘Hey, I got an idea. There’s a half-yard over/under for me rushing for half a yard in the Super Bowl. Here’s what I’m saying: We all put in $1 million and the first time they’re in two three-techniques, I’m going to gain six and … we’re going to fund our offseason.’
“I go, ‘You can’t.’ He goes, ‘I promise you if we have a million on it, I will not get sacked. We will not lose the money.’”
The three-technique is a defensive set that is easier for a quarterback or running back to gain yardage up the middle.
Oh, but Brady was joking, of course, and Christensen is very aware of the gambling no-no in the NFL.
“We didn’t do it, FYI, for the record for the IRS and NFL. It was just a joke.” Christensen said.
The “over” was good value, too, paying up to +180 (bet $100 to win $180).
It’s good that the information stayed in the QB room because, had that conversation been leaked, there would be a big group of disappointed Brady-rushing backers.
The winning side turned out to be the “under” because Brady finished with minus-2 yards rushing.
