There’s terrible customer service, and then there’s what Hertz allegedly has done to hundreds of people who rented cars from the company that recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Lawyers are gearing up to file 100 new claims on behalf of Hertz customers who claim they were victims of false arrest incidents.

Yes, it’s a thing. Hertz customers have been pulled over at gunpoint by police and arrested because Hertz accused paying customers of car theft.  It’s almost too preposterous to believe.

Brittany Morgan and Jeremy Benjamin are two people in that batch of 100 who are suing. According to Fox Business, they rented a Ford Mustang from Hertz in Houston, and then a nightmare began.

Here’s what the couple wrote in a legal declaration.

“We showed the police the paperwork and told them we had obviously not stolen the car. We were stunned when the police told us that the license plate on our car was from another car that was reported stolen and that it was not even the license plate listed on our rental paperwork. We are infuriated that something like this could happen and dumbfounded to learn that Hertz has previously rented “stolen” cars to customers.”

Michael Okoqasia has an even worse story. He was in LA three years ago and had rented a car from Hertz and was pulled over in Hollywood at gunpoint by ten officers.

According to Okogasia, it was another classic screwup by Hertz.

“Hertz had rented me the wrong car and then, without any investigation, reported the car I was driving stolen. I was eventually let go, and the car towed, but not before a very public arrest in Hollywood.”

This is not a remote situation. Two hundred thirty cases have been filed against Hertz, with defendants seeking $750 million in damages. Congress is ticked off too, and demanding answers from Hertz.

Here’s part of a statement Hertz gave Fox.

“Hertz cares deeply about our customers, and we successfully provide rental vehicles for tens of millions of travelers each year Where our customers have been negatively affected, we are committed to doing what is right by our customers. At the same time, we will protect and defend against false claims intended to cause our company harm.”
