The Super Bowl is an American holiday. It hasn’t been declared officially, but it is. In Cincinnati, school kids have Monday after the big game off, so they can continue celebrating or weeping.

The big game kicks off Sunday around 6:15 Eastern, and it will be like none other.  For the first time ever, a home team will be playing in their home stadium, with a packed house.  The Tampa Bay Bucs won last year’s Super Bowl, but the stadium was less than half full.

So as the commercials rage on, and the inferior ones air in the third and fourth quarter, sound smarter at the party you’re at with some of these fun facts.

  1. Which school has produced the most Super Bowl quarterbacks?

Cal.  The University of California, with a total of five. Jared Goff of the Rams, Joe Kapp, Craig Morton, Vince Ferragamo, and Aaron Rogers.

2. What could Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow accomplish that has never been done?

He could become the first player to win a college national championship, the Heisman Trophy, be selected No. 1 in the NFL draft, and win a Super Bowl.  And he would have done it in just two years.

3.  The Super Bowl will feature both starting quarterbacks (Joe Burrow and Matthew Stafford) who wear No. 9, and were the top selection in their respective drafts.

4.  This will be the first Super Bowl in Los Angeles in 29 years.  It will be 80 degrees in LA on Sunday, but the game will be played indoors.

5.  How many NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl?

12 teams, hopefully your favorite one isn’t on this list. (Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, LA Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals.)

*The Rams have won a Super Bowl, but not when they were located in Los Angeles. They did it in St. Louis.

Finally, the only other day more food is consumed than Super Bowl Sunday is Thanksgiving.  And the thing that separates the two holidays is on the Super Bowl the Detroit Lions aren’t there to put you to sleep.
