Sour notes are always part of the annual Razzie Awards, but the 2021 version brought music to the forefront.
And Music is the name of the headliner from the worst in film presentations.
Called by USA Today a “seemingly well-intentioned but deeply misguided drama” directed by musician Sia, starring Kate Hudson, Music claimed three Razzies after being shut out in the Golden Globes.
The fact that it was nominated for two Golden Globes astounded many critics.
The film swept three big categories, “winning” with actress (Kate Hudson), supporting actress (Maddie Ziegler) and director (Sia).
Ziegler, who is not autistic, was cast as an autistic girl (hey, there are actors on the autism spectrum available).
The Razzies, or, formally, the Golden Raspberry Awards, are satirical honors voted on by 1,090 members from the U.S. and abroad. They are presented the day before the Oscars.
Academy Award nominees were not exempt, either.
Glenn Close, an Academy Award nominee for supporting actress for her role in Hillbilly Elegy, also was up for a Razzie in that category (she didn’t win at the Razzies), and the Oscar-nominated Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also was a Razzie nominee (also didn’t “win”).
But all was not lost for Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat sequel: It won two Razzies, both because of Rudy Giuliani’s famous/infamous “performance.”
Giuliani collected the honors for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo: Rudy Giuliani and His Pants Zipper.
The political slant continued with a worst actor and picture nod for MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s election-fraud film, Absolute Proof, which claimed an “unprecedented level of voter fraud” in the presidential election.
The Razzies certainly nailed the special “Governors’ Award” for worst achievements, awarding the year 2020 as the “The Worst Calendar Year Ever!”
