The incoming Biden administration appears to be at least somewhat concerned about Secret Service agents who may be loyal to President Trump. In response, the Secret Service is planning to add a number of agents who previously worked with Joe Biden when he served as vice president.

Allies of the incoming president have reportedly expressed concerns about how some agents may align with President Trump.

In a statement to the Washington Post, Catherine Milhoan, a spokeswoman for the agency, said the Secret Service “remains steadfastly dedicated to a standard of excellence in those operations, wholly apolitically and unaffiliated with the political parties of protectees.” She also added that “As a matter of practice and due to operational security, the agency does not comment on protective operations inclusive of internal decisions on agency assignments.”

It’s not uncommon for the presidential detail to change agents to ones who would be more familiar with the new president. These changes, however, come at a time of heightened political tension when allies of Biden worry about the political loyalty that current agents may have towards Trump. As the Post pointed out, some of Trump’s presidential detail members have encouraged other agents to not wear face masks around the president, out of loyalty to him. Those types of actions fueled concerns among Biden’s allies.

The Secret Service sent additional agents to Delaware in early November following the election in anticipation of Biden’s presidential win.
