There’s another reason that there are a record number of job openings in the U.S..

A historically high number of people are quitting the jobs they have.

In June, there was a record 10.1 million jobs available, but balancing that number off is the record number of people walking away from their gigs.

In June, 3.9 million people quit their job, a 300,000 increase from May.  In April a record 4 million people quit their job, so a trend had developed earlier in 2021 that continues to grow.

The demand for workers is huge, especially now that many businesses are re-opening and expanding after having to shut down during the pandemic.  The problem for so many business owners and hiring managers is finding people that actually want to take the jobs that are open.

Industries that have some of the higher percentages of people who quit are hospitality and leisure.  According to a story in Business Insider, during the three month span of April, May, and June, 778,000 quit their jobs, with many receiving unemployment benefits that paid more than the actual gig.

There’s one more reason the story referenced that could be a reason for such high numbers of people quitting: employees are trying to hold out for more pay.

Burn out is also a factor, especially in specific industries that require long and grueling hours.

So for the near future, and possibly much longer, quits will be rising along with the demand to find workers.
