If you think it’s painful at the pump for average Americans to fill up their gas tank, imagine being a truck. It’s much worse because the price of diesel fuel has hit an all-time in the United States thanks to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and inflation.
The average cost of a gallon of diesel is $5.30, up 4.3% from last week and almost double what a gallon cost a year ago.
As for gas prices, they are at $4.187 on average nationally, down a few pennies from earlier this spring.
Some truckers are feeling desperate. Here’s what a trucker named Michal Agboire told WNCN Television.
“The prices are skyrocketing, and we still don’t get good prices for the loads. If it goes any higher than this, and the price of the load not coming up, then maybe we just call it quits.”
To cover the huge diesel price increase, prices are being handed down to consumers. Retail prices for goods truckers move around will rise because of this.
Here’s a quote from Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analyst at Gas Buddy. in a publication called www.oilprice.com
“While gasoline prices get much of the attention, diesel, which broadly is the fuel that moves the economy, has quietly surpassed its recent record high as distillate inventories, which include diesel and jet fuel, have plummeted to their lowest level in years.”
What’s worse is that experts feel diesel prices could eclipse the $6.00 mark as Russia cuts off natural gas supplies to Europe, including Poland and Bulgaria.
