The list of people who have run to the defense of Will Smith after his assault on Chris Rock at the Oscars is thin. You can officially add one name to it, DJ Jazzy Jeff,  Smith’s former rap partner who starred with him on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

With his better days as a relevant rap star over two decades in the rearview mirror, Jazzy Jeff goes by his real name of Jeffrey Townes.  Here’s what he told WCGI Radio in Chicago.

“Don’t get it twisted that, you know, this would be something that he’s proud of. It was a lapse in judgment, you know? And I think the thing that I’ve realized is I don’t know too many people that has had the least amount of lapse of judgment than him. I can name 50 times that he should’ve smacked the s*** out of somebody and he didn’t. So for him to have a lapse in judgment, he’s human. And I think a lot of the criticism comes from the people who don’t think people like that are human.”

If you’re scoring at home, add Jazzy Jeff right next to Michael Bay, the director of Bad Boys, and Tatyana All (Ashley), who starred with Smith on Fresh Prince as public defenders of Smith.

Carlton, aka Alfonso Ribeiro, we’re waiting on you.
