The NFL is the gold standard of professional sports leagues for several reasons.  Most notably, they are, without question, the most forward-thinking.  They are unafraid to change, they adapt and pivot better than any sports league, and they constantly have an eye on fan experience and revenue.

They just launched their latest fan-friendly upgrade that will undoubtedly turn into another cash cow; their own streaming platform.

Their new venture, called nfl+, is a subscription service available on two levels.  One is $4.99 per month, and the other at $9.99, which offers more content.

The NFL will now have the ability to reach fans directly while continuing its current relationships with CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC/ESPN, which will bring the league $110 billion in TV revenue over the eleven years.

Fans interested in the $4.99 per month service can access their local team’s games and all primetime games on their mobile phones or tablets, but not on a regular TV.  It will also give fans access to radio calls of games so they can listen to their favorite announcers.

The highlights of the $9.99 “Premium” service delivers everything the other tier offers, along with the ability to watch games multiple times and condensed game replays which can be watched in a fraction of the typical 3 hours and 15 minutes of an NFL game.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said this in a statement.

“Today marks an important day in the history of the National Football League.”

The NFL currently brings in nearly $13 billion in revenue annually.  Over 80% of the top 100 television shows last year were NFL games.
