Who said drug smugglers aren’t creative?  If not for the K9 units at the Otay Mesa border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego, a 46-year old from Mexico may have gotten away with trying to move $3 million worth of methamphetamines across the border.

The drugs came in 1,197 packages and were packed with real onions in the back of a semi trailer.  The smuggler thought he had the perfect plan in place because the meth was shaped into small globes with white coverings.

Here’s what Sidney Aki, the Director of Field Operations in San Diego for US Customs and Border Protection, said in a statement.

“This was not only a clever attempt to try and smuggle in narcotics, one I haven’t seen before, but also time-consuming to wrap narcotics into these small packages, designed to look like onions.”

Experienced Customs officials see every type of scheme used to move drugs across the border, but they were impressed with this attempt even though it failed spectacularly.

“While we have certainly seen narcotics in produce before, it’s unusual for us to see this level of detail in the concealment.”

As for the 46-year old smuggler? Well, his attempt at moving 1,336 pounds of meth will provide stories for customs officials for months, he was turned over to immigration authorities.
