Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden urged patience and unity during his speech in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday night. Biden went on to predict that he would eventually secure a convincing electoral college victory, as he currently holds leads over President Trump in a number of key swing states.
“I know watching these vote tallies on TV moves very slow, slow – and as slow as it goes, it can be numbing. But never forget, the tallies aren’t just numbers. They represent votes and voters, men and women who exercised their fundamental right to have their voice heard,” Biden said.
“We’re going to win this race with a clear majority, with the nation behind us,” Biden continued. “We’ve gotten 74 million votes, I’m going to repeat that, 74 million votes. That’s more than any other presidential ticket in the United States of America. And our total is still growing. We’re beating Donald Trump by over 4 million votes and the margin is growing as well.” It’s interesting to note that Donald Trump has now received the second most votes ever in a Presidential election, only trailing Biden in that category.
Biden also tried to reinforce a healing message, saying, “We may be opponents, but we’re not enemies. We’re Americans. And no matter who you voted for, I’m certain of one thing: The vast majority of the 150 million Americans who voted, they want to get the vitriol out of our politics.
“We’re certainly not going to agree on a lot of issues. But at least we can agree to be civil with one another. We have to put the anger and demonization behind us.”
As the vote-counting continues in a number of states, Republican accusations of voter fraud, software glitches awarding Trump votes to Biden, and questions about voting integrity are fueling further division between the parties. It’s clear that “healing” is going to be tough sell for either side at this point.
