Attention anyone that refers to Instagram as a photo sharing app: you could not be more wrong!

So says the head of IG, Adam Mosseri, who announced his company is now planning to focus on entertainment and video due to the success of their main competitors Tik Tok and YouTube.

Mosseri made it official on Instagram, posting a message that said the following.  “At Instagram we’re always trying to build new features that help you get the most out of your experience. Right now we’re focused on four key areas: Creators, Video, Shopping and Messaging.”

That is not a subtle message.  IG desperately wants to evolve from being known as simply the “square photo-sharing app” according to the boss. Consider them a “general entertainment app driven by algorithms and videos.”   Not a sexy title by any means, but it gets the point across.

How will Instagram evolve into a true blue threat on video for the tech titans they are chasing? We’ll have to wait and see.

But just don’t call them a photo sharing app as they make that transition.
