A couple in India wanted grandchildren. They have one son who is now 35 years old, and so far, he has not delivered a grandchild to his parents, which has prompted them to sue their son and daughter-in-law for having the audacity not to provide them a little grandson or granddaughter to play with.

Sanhana and Sanjeev Prasad aren’t messing around either; they want 50 million Indian Rupees in damages, which is about $643,000.  The plaintiffs figured they spent about 20 million Indian rupees ($257,000) raising their son, so it’s time for payback.

Here’s a quote from their lawyer in a CNN story.  This guy means business.

“They raised him, educated him, made him capable, made him a pilot — which was expensive.

They see people in their neighborhood playing with their grandchildren and feel like they should also have one. They said they didn’t marry (their son and daughter-in-law) off so that they can live alone … So they said that in the next year, either give us a grandchild or give us compensation.”

The Prasads are diligent with their bookkeeping on what they spent on their son.  They mentioned they also bought him a car and paid for the honeymoon their son and bride went on.

The family obligation topic is a very big deal in India. Caring for elderly parents and carrying on the family line is considered a filial duty by a large portion of the population.
