With the water level at Lake Mead in Nevada continuing to drop because of a long-term drought in the West, certain things get revealed and noticed that would usually be buried under the water in the nation’s largest reservoir.

Things like barrels containing the remains of a human body.  That’s what someone hanging out at the lake Sunday found. Because the barrel’s wood had become corroded over time, the person who discovered it could actually see inside the barrel and notice the remains in it.

It didn’t take police long to determine who might be the victim in the barrel. They said in a press release that an investigation is underway, but they believe the victim was murdered sometime in the 1970s or 80s based on the clothing and shoes the victim was wearing.

Was it a Mafia hit? Police are certainly not ruling it out and hope to have the body identified shortly.

As for that decreasing water level; it is roughly 160 feet below its level 22 years ago, the last time it was considered full. The level it sits at now is the lowest ever recorded, which is a serious problem because 2.2 million people in Las Vegas and southern Nevada rely on that water.

According to a CNN story, investigators believe the barrel with the body was dropped hundreds of yards off the shore, and they expect to find more bodies as the water level continues to dip.
