There appear to be talks of peace being a little closer to reality between Russia and Ukraine Tuesday than it has been since the start of the invasion over a month ago.

Talks in Istanbul, Turkey, were a step in the right direction to end the war.

Here are some of the reported highlights.

Russia’s defense ministry said they would peel back on their assaults on Kyiv and Chernihiv, two Ukrainian cities that Russian military forces have bombarded.

Here’s a quote from Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Alexander Fomin.

“Taking into account the principles discussed during today’s meeting … in order to increase mutual trust and create the necessary conditions for further negotiations and achieving the ultimate goal of agreeing on the signing of the above [peace] agreement, a decision was made to drastically reduce military activity in the Kyiv and Chernihiv direction.”

Ukraine reportedly made an offer to Russia, saying they would never join NATO as part of the negotiation.

On Tuesday, a Ukrainian negotiator named Mykhailo Podoliak tweeted that his country needed to see a treaty guaranteeing security and implementation of humanitarian convoys and corridors.
