Elon Musk has a very defined, polished, big and specific brand. Exercising caution is generally not part of it.

But something has changed in his messaging regarding cryptocurrency, seemingly overnight.

On Thursday night, maybe right around the time he was wrapping up rehearsals for his Saturday Night Live hosting gig on Saturday, he sent out a tweet that caught a lot of people off guard.

“Cryptocurrency is promising, but please invest with caution!”

Connected to that tweet was a link to an interview he did with TMZ three months ago, where he  said essentially the same thing, specifically this.

“People should not invest their life savings in cryptocurrency, to be clear. That’s unwise.

Musk’s personal crypto of choice lately has been Dogecoin. He’s been tweeting memes about it, and having fun with the volatile crypto that initially started out as a joke, to make fun of cryptocurrency.

But with Tesla, Musk has been bullish on bitcoin, being billions of dollars of it and accepting it as payment for new vehicles.

If nothing else, it’s a master stroke of promoting his appearance on SNL Saturday.  We’ll soon find out if Musk can act, and if he uses the huge forum to throw out some cryptic messaging about crypto.

Which he really seems to enjoy doing.
