In the UK, it seems Coca-Cola lovers have a hard time remembering to recycle not only the plastic bottle their drink came in but also the bottle cap.  So the company is going to make it easier for them to do it by changing the way bottles are manufactured.

Coke unveiled new plastic bottles with the cap attached.  You can’t twist it off and forget about it; it stays on the bottle, making the entire bottle recyclable.

According to the Atlanta-based company, their caps ended up in the trash can more often than recycle cans, hence these new bottles.

Here’s a quote from Coke’s GM vernal manager Jon Woods.

“This is a small change that we hope will have a big impact, ensuring that when consumers recycle our bottles, no cap gets left behind.”

This is only happening in the UK for now, and the products with the new bottles that will be rolled out in the next two years will be Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, and Dr. Pepper. Look for it to happen in two years.

If you’re wondering why Coke is being so environmentally friendly, well, they’re forced to be. The European Union requires that caps be attached to some plastic bottles in the next two years.  Coke is essentially getting a head start on it.

  • On a global scale, Coca-Cola plans to reconfigure its cans and bottles so their composition is  50% recycled materials by 2030 and they want their packaging to be 100% recyclable by 2025.
