This is a new move I’ve never seen a celebrity do before, but chances are it could become a trend.  On Sunday, soccer icon David Beckham turned over control of his Instagram account and his 71.6 million followers to a Ukrainian doctor to showcase the “amazing work” of medical professionals working around the clock caring for victims of the Russian invasion.

Dr. Iryna is the head of a perinatal center in Kharkiv. She posted clips and images from the second-largest city in Ukraine to tell the story of how the war has impacted her life and her fellow medical professionals.  UNICEF organized the IG takeover, and Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the past 16 years.

In an Instagram Story, Dr. Iryna said that she is working 24/7 and felt her life was definitely in danger, but she spoke of how she and her team love their work.

”Unfortunately, we can’t take babies who are in intensive care to the basement because they rely on life-saving equipment.” She posted photos of newborn babies in intensive care along with that message.

Here are two more postings.

“The first days were the most difficult. We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes. My workday is 24/7 now, I’m here all day.”

“Now, I’m not only the head of the center, but I continue to work as a pediatric anesthesiologist. I unload cargo, I work on logistics and offer emotional support.”

Beckham later urged his followers to donate to UNICEF, whom he said is working in Ukraine to bring access to clean water and food to families.

Here’s part of Beckham’s message he delivered to his followers.

“Thanks to your donations, the oxygen generators they have received are helping newborns survive in appalling conditions. Please continue to support these incredible people and charities like UNICEF in any way that you can. Together we can really make a difference.”
