File this under the category of “you had one job.”

There was most likely an uptick in cursing, pounding of credit card processing machines, and rebooting of internet routers across the country, as scores of businesses were forced to only accept cash payments because their credit card payment systems were down.

It wasn’t the fault of the retailers, the blame goes to Fiserv, one of the top payment providers in the U.S. “A widespread internet service provider outage has impacted multiple businesses today.” Ann Cave, a company spokesperson for Fiserv told Business Insider in an email.

“Some Fiserv services that rely on internet connectivity were interrupted. The majority have been restored and we are fully focused on restoring the remainder.”

The list of businesses affected is a who’s who of American retail.  Chick-fil-A had issues, and gave out free meals because of it.

Ikea, McDonald’s, Popeyes and Forever 21 felt the pain. Miami International Airport had an outage, an so did the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. As if going to the DMV isn’t frustrating enough!
