President Trump’s positive coronavirus test was certainly unexpected, and now some of the reactions to the news are just as surprising. Friday night, Stephen Colbert took to the airwaves in what he called an “unusual” and “unexpected” episode of “The Late Show” on CBS. Colbert expressed support and concern for the president and first lady Melania Trump, who had both tested positive for the virus within the previous 24-hours.

With the presidential election now just a month away, Colbert pointed to the president’s diagnosis as something to be concerned about. “Now, say what you will about the president, and I do,” Colbert said. “This is a serious moment for our nation and we all wish the president and the first lady of the United States a speedy and a full recovery.”

Known for cracking jokes at the president’s expense and making personal attacks against him weekly, Colbert went on to say that the news of the diagnosis was “disturbing” and that he is “worried” for him. The “Late Show” host also said he had not planned to be on air on Friday night until he learned of the president’s diagnosis.

Despite the somber topic, Colbert did still mange to land a few jokes at the president’s expense. After crediting Joe Biden with a “classy” response to the president’s diagnosis, he added “And let’s not forget Biden needs Trump to get better. I mean, at the next debate, Joe can’t interrupt himself!”
