CNN+ continues to make negative headlines even after its epic failure. That’s hard to do, but they found a way.  By sending out welcome baskets to hundreds of workers who had already been laid off.

The news streaming site will go down as one of the most collasol flops in media history.  The company spent $250 million on the site’s launch, hiring high-profile personalities including Chris Wallace and an army of producers, writers, reporters, and support staff. On March 29th of this year, they flipped the switch, and it went live. And nobody cared.

The digital channel never attained an audience above 10,000, and on April 21, they pulled the plug entirely and announced it would be shut down.

A week later, hundreds of workers who had been let go received the welcome gifts, according to the Wall Street Journal.  They contained items like pens; headphones branded CNN gear and even a popcorn maker. There were notes included in some of the packets with inspiring messages that were probably not positively received.

“This is an incredible time to be part of CNN. Build relationships and take time to connect with colleagues and learn so that you make the most of your time here.”

Their time there that had already ended. According to CNN, they were mistakenly sent out. Which seemed to be obvious.

A story in Insider quoted sources at CNN who pinned the blame for its collapse on two people who are no longer at the network; former president Jeff Zucker and WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar.

“This was all ego. All a power play for a bigger job or independence. Hubris. Nothing more. The only people who ever thought this was a good idea either worked at CNN or were trying to get CNN + to hire them. Nobody else.”
