Deepening the political divide in the U.S. seems to be a call of duty for many prominent Republican and Democrat influence peddlers these days. Anti-Trump film director Rob Reiner took his turn via Twitter with the opinion, perhaps thinly veiled in sarcasm, that the president is continuing his plan to kill Americans in the final days of campaigning.

Reiner, 73, pounced on Trump’s lack of adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols. “Trump’s closing strategy: Blanket the country with super-spreader rallies and kill as many Americans as possible,” Reiner tweeted.

In the Washington Times, writer Victor Morton believes Reiner literally sees Trump as a killer, saying Reiner “thinks that President Trump’s reelection strategy is to kill his supporters” and that there was “no obvious indication that Mr. Reiner was being sarcastic; indeed the previous day he had repeated his calls that Mr. Trump is a murderous sociopath.”

Reiner has 1.2 million Twitter followers and likely was inspired by Trump’s ambitious schedule of live events this week. In a post on Monday, Reiner wrote: “Can’t wait until we have a President who cares whether or not we die.”

He’s nothing if not consistent. Last month, Reiner referenced a Trump comment from 2016, when Trump said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it.

“Donald Trump has essentially shot and killed 100s of thousands of Americans on 5th Ave, continues to do it every day, and he’s right, his cult doesn’t care. But the rest of US do. In 42 days we will arrest the killer,” Reiner tweeted.

And, after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Reiner wrote via Twitter: “Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s body isn’t even cold and Mitch McConnell is dancing on her grave,” Reiner wrote on Twitter. “This is war. Dems have powerful weapons. Now is the time to use them.”
