Here’s a way to kind of work for Apple without the salary, stock options, benefits, and actual job title.
For the first time, Apple will enable owners of iPhones to repair their own devices.
They rolled out what’s called their “Self Service Repair” program Wednesday and are set to sell parts for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 early next year.
After that, you can try your hand at fixing your Macs too.
Don’t worry; you don’t need to be a Stanford-trained engineer to make some of these basic fixes. They are starting with pretty basic iPhone parts like screens, batteries, and cameras. They’ll ramp up options for DIY phone repair after that.
Here’s what Apple had to say about the new program in a blog post.
“Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.”
For years Apple loyalists have begged for this type of option, and now it’s available if you think you have the skills to pull it off.
If you love the experience of spending hours of your day trying to book a Genius Bar appointment, driving to the store, parking, waiting in line, and finally getting in, you still have that option too.
