New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo might have just avoided a round of boos amid what Buffalo Bills fans expect to be a playoff game filled with cheers.

After pushback about announcing his plans to attend the Bills’ first game with fans, Cuomo decided to give his tickets for Saturday’s game to an area nurse. A petition against Cuomo’s presence gathered tens of thousands of e-signatures from Bills fans who did not want the governor there for the wild card game against the Indianapolis Colts. About 6,772 fans (9% of stadium capacity) are being allowed to attend the game.

“I’m going to give my Bills ticket to a nurse from Erie County Medical Center as a way of saying thank you and honoring all healthcare heroes,” Cuomo said.

The petition, started by Bills fan Jeffrey Dorenzo, said, “If he thinks he has more right to a seat in that stadium over people who have waited over 20 years for this opportunity, then people better be there to protest his entry.”

The 9% stadium capacity will be allowed to season-ticket holders who sit in a socially distanced arrangement, wear masks and test negative for COVID-19 on their own within 72 hours of the game, the Bills announced. No tailgating will be allowed.

Cuomo hinted that this game could lead to other venue openings, such as concerts, sports and Broadway.

Maybe he can ease his way into a Knicks game. The fans there are more angry about how bad the franchise has been.
