It takes a long time to count everybody in the United States.  That’s why a new census comes out only every 10 years.

The results of the 2020 census were released this week, and here are some of the highlights.

New York City grew. An additional 629,000 people moved into the Big Apple in the past decade.  That’s like adding the entire popular of Las Vegas.

Phoenix is the fastest-growing city in the U.S., and is now the fifth largest city in America, passing Philadelphia.

The growth rate of the U.S. population slowed down by the largest rate in almost a century. The population grew 7.4% from 2010, but that’s the lowest growth rate since the 1930’s, and economists say that’s not good because it means less economic growth for the country, especially coming out of a pandemic.

The fastest growing metro area in the county is The Villages, a retirement community in Florida. Their population grew almost 40% in the past ten years.

Trends in population shifts show a growing trend in the U.S. of people leaving the Northeast and Midwest for warmer climes in the South and West.

Rural areas continue to shrink as Americans migrate to cities.

Outside of being interesting to read and hear about, the population data is extremely important because it is how legislative districts are drawn up.  It potentially could play a huge role in upcoming mid-term elections, and Republicans and Democrats are pouring over the census findings to try to find a way for them to control Congress.
